Working out is hard. Working out when you have little ones is even harder. One of the biggest struggles for me as a first time mom has been working fitness into our everyday life. Prior to having Allie, I was at the gym 5-6 days a week without fail. I love the gym. It’s my favorite place to go when I’ve had a stressful day or need some time to myself. Not to mention I love the feeling of getting in a good workout and being healthy. The gym is my happy place.

After Allie was born, it naturally became more challenging to work out for the simple reason that she’s with me a good 99.9% of the time. And with Zack working for a good majority of the day, it was just wasn’t appealing to me to go to the gym at night after a long day of being a mom and business owner. At that point, I really just wanted to have a glass of wine and relax for the night. Understandable!

While I still go to the gym, I’ve had to find easier ways to get in my exercise and keep myself healthy during the day for those days when I know I’m just not going to want to drive to the gym. So today I wanted to share some super easy ways to get back in shape after baby that you can start doing today!

Go For A Jog/Run

Cardio is probably one of the easiest workouts to do with a baby or toddler. Allie and I try to go for a 5 mile run every single day. Preferably first thing in the morning, but sometimes things come up, like work and we don’t go until she’s in between naps. But we always make it a priority to get out and moving.

I pack the essentials with us such as a light jacket (for when it’s early in the morning and possibly chilly outside), snacks, a sippy cup of water or “juice” (aka 6 ounces of water and 2 ounces of apple juice lol), a couple toys, baby wipes, sunscreen and some music. This keeps Allie entertained during our run so I’m not constantly having to stop to check on her or soothe her. She actually never cries if she’s in her stroller so that’s a huge deal to me. It makes taking her places so much easier. If she’s having a rough morning then I always opt to take her for a run to get her out. She loves sightseeing so she’s almost silent the entire time!

Have The Right Accessories

Having the right accessories is so helpful for me whether it’s new running sneakers, at-home workout equipment, or cute workout clothes. Sometimes buying something new can instantly motivate you to get to the gym or out of the house for a run.

Watch What You Eat

This is crucial. If you do not have the time in your day to work out (and even if you are working out) then you need to be eating healthy! Pounds won’t be lost if you’re eating anything and everything in sight. You need to have some control here and be smart about the foods you’re purchasing and putting into your body.

I personally love keeping meats, fruits and veggies in our home. I love eating something like scrambled eggs or an omelet for breakfast. Lunches are typically a nice big salad with spinach leaves, chicken or salmon, cherry tomatoes, egg, cucumber and any other veggies I want to toss on there (adding a meat helps to much in making your salad more filling!!). And then dinners are typically a meat, a veggie and one other side. I try to stay away from mashed potatoes and pasta as much as possible. A good substitution there would be something like sweet potatoes. Still a carb, but not as “bad” as mashed potatoes loaded with butter. As for snacks, I love snacking on veggies with hummus, cucumbers and ranch dressing, berries, bananas and peanut butter, hard boiled eggs, etc.

I’m not on any sort of diet and I’m not super strict with that I eat. But I do try to watch what it is I’m putting into my body and I eat a mix of everything in moderation. That’s the key there. Moderation!

Stay Hydrated

I know everyone says this but drinking enough water is super important. Especially if you’re breastfeeding. And if you’re working out then you need even more water in your day. It’s recommend to drink 64 ounces of water a day, but I always aim for drinking my weight in water. So if I weigh 125 pounds, then I’m drinking (or trying to drink) 125 ounces of water. Usually I average about 100 ounces so that’s good to me. Keeping your body hydrated helps your body in so many ways.

Get Enough Sleep

You probably laughed at this one. But seriously. Your sleep is so incredibly important and it greatly affects both your mental and physical health. This is why I swear by sleep training, but that’s a whole other topic that I’ll go over in another post. Everyone in your home needs to be well-rested. You included. So if that means taking a nap when your baby is napping or going to bed early and passing off parenting duties to your spouse or a family member then do it! Whatever it takes, do it. I promise you’ll feel so much better and much more motivated when you’re well-rested.
