One of the top excuses people tend to have for why they can’t workout is that there’s not enough hours in the day to fit it in. I get it. Sometimes life gets hectic and driving to the gym for an hour long workout just doesn’t always sound appealing or doable. Add in kids, work schedules, social lives, your significant other, family, and everything else you have going on in your life and it can seem almost impossible to ever find the time to work out.
But working out doesn’t always have to involve an hour long session at the gym. It can be a morning jog with the jogging stroller or a quick ab workout at the office. Heel raises while you brush your teeth or some stretches during a commercial break. If you truly do not have the time to spend at a gym, then you’ll just have to get creative! So here are ten easy ways to make time for fitness.
1. Add it to your schedule.
Sometimes life gets busy. I get it! So if you’re finding it challenging to naturally weave fitness into your everyday life, then try adding it to your schedule. Otherwise, it may never happen because x, y, z occurred. You’ll be more likely to do it if it’s already in your schedule because that time has already been set aside for it. So when you’re setting your schedule for the day or week then be sure to add in your workouts.
2. Set your alarm early.
I admit, working out first thing in the morning isn’t always something that sounds appealing to me. But setting your alarm for an hour earlier will add some time to your day to get in a quick workout whether it’s a great morning yoga flow, a jog through your neighborhood, or even a quick ab workout in the living room. Set aside maybe 30-45 minutes for your workout so you still have time for a quick shower before you head into work or your little ones wake up.
3. Work out on your lunch break.
If you have the space for it in your office, buy some weights and other miscellaneous workout equipment to keep in or under your desk at work. When you’re in between tasks or are on your lunch break, then take a moment to get in a good arm workout or go for a walk with a coworker. Whatever you have time for, do it!
4. Find a workout buddy.
Sometimes having someone to work out with will help a ton in keeping you motivated and on track. I like to find workout buddies who are just as (if not more) motivated than I am. That way I know I have someone who’s going to hold me accountable and kick my butt into gear when I need it.
5. Go for a jog with the kids (or dog).
Having a baby doesn’t mean you can’t work out. If you invest in a good jogging stroller, you can easily get in your miles each day without having to pay for a sitter. There are also plenty of stroller workouts on Pinterest too if you want to upgrade your workout from more than just a jog. And if you’re a fur baby parent, then take the dog for a walk or jog! I’m sure they’d love the fresh air and exercise as well.
6. Work out while you get ready in the morning.
This may be easier for some than it is for others. But when I’m getting ready in the morning, I use that time to also stretch out my body for the day. My legs, especially. I’ll prop my leg up on the counter while I’m brushing my teeth or doing my makeup to stretch out those hamstrings a bit. Then after a minute or two, I’ll switch legs. You can even use this time to get in some squats, heel raises, etc.
I’m a big multi-tasker on the treadmill. Sometimes if I have some blog or schoolwork to get done then I’ll bring it to the gym with me (or next door to our apartment’s fitness center) and do some reading or work while I’m walking. To make it a little more challenging, I’ll set the treadmill to an incline too so I’m working out my legs a bit more as well. Multitasking can also be done on the stationary bike if you’d rather be sitting. And sometimes, it’s just plain easier to read while sitting than it is when walking.
8. Work out while watching tv.
Commercial breaks are the perfect time to get in a quick workout. Push-ups, jumping jacks, crunches, squats, dumbbell workouts, etc. can all be done while you catch up on your favorite shows. And again, there are a lot of awesome at-home workout routines on Pinterest that you can use as motivation.
9. Take advantage of nap time.
I know that there are millions of things that have to be done during nap time; dishes, laundry, possibly some schoolwork, maybe a nap for yourself, a shower. But you could also use this time to get in a quick workout. The cleaning really can wait a little longer and I promise your child’s toys will still be on the floor once you’re done your workout. Use this time to do something for you!
It’s just not possible to do everything yourself. So when all else fails, pawn something on your to do list off on someone else. If your kids are old enough to help out around the house, then let them! If your significant other is home then let them take over parenting duties for a bit or take over the cooking, cleaning, grocery shopping, laundry, or whatever else might be standing in your way of getting in a good workout that day. Asking for help so you can make time for yourself and your health is never a bad thing!
