How To Get The Perfect Smokey Eye | MainelyKeating.com

If you’re a military spouse, you know that this is the time of year for military balls. Spouses spend a lot of time preparing for an important night like this from the ballgown to the shoes to the accessories. Then they spend hours searching Pinterest for the perfect hair and makeup to complete the look. For any major special occasion like this, I always tend to go for a smokey eye. A smokey eye is an easy way to step up your everyday makeup to take it from day to night in a flash. And the best thing about a smokey eye is that it doesn’t always have to be black (crazy, I know! I really thought smokey eyes were always black).

For my chosen gown this year, I’m debating between a brown smokey eye and a maroon smokey eye. I still have some time to figure it out, but for this tutorial, I’m going to show you a brown smokey eye because it’s so universal. A look like this doesn’t just have to be saved for a nighttime event. It’s natural enough to be worn during the daytime without being too over the top. And with that said, it’s perfect for those who want a more subtle smokey eye that pops, but isn’t quite so dramatic as a dark, black smokey eye. So let’s get started!

START WITH YOUR BASE.

This tutorial is solely focusing on your smokey eye so be sure to do your entire base beforehand. Currently on my own face I used a primer, two different foundations, a concealer, highlighter, and bronzer. My entire base is complete  and ready for some eyeshadow!

*Be sure to use an awesome primer for your eyelids to lock the eye shadow in place! You wouldn’t want it melting off at some point during the night.

LAYER #1:

The way I was taught to do eyeshadow (especially smokey eyes) is to do it in three layers. I learned this in high school and have been in love with the process ever since. Mainly because it’s super simple and easy to do. You don’t have to be a professional to get a great smokey eye. The first layer is just under your eyebrow and should be the lightest of the three colors. I typically use a very pale tan if I’m doing a brown smokey eye like I am today. If I’m using blacks, then I’ll make a first layer a shimmery white.

LAYER #2: THE EYELID

Next we have the eyelid. Since I’m doing this for a nighttime event, I chose a gold base for this smokey eye. If you’re using it for a daytime look then you can either stick with the gold or use a lighter shade of brown or tan. Whatever works for you! Use this color to completely fill in each eyelid.

LAYER #3: THE CREASE

The last step of the eyeshadow is the crease. This is where your darkest shade will go. As pictured above, I chose a pretty dark brown for this area of my eye (this is also one of my all-time favorite eye shadow pallets. If you don’t have it already, you should definitely add it to your makeup collection!). Using and eyeshadow brush, I take this color and just go back and forth along that crease. This color should be in between your first and second layers to give it that smokey look.

MASCARA & EYELINER.

Once you have all the eyeshadow on, complete your look with your favorite mascara and eyeshadow. I start with my eyeliner. For a smokey eye, I’ll do a slightly thicker line on top to make my eyelashes look a bit more full. On the bottom, I do a suuuuuper thin line. You do not want to do the bottom too thick otherwise you’ll end up with raccoon eyes and no one wants that!

Like my foundation, I actually do my mascara in two layers with two different mascaras. Why? I’m not really sure. But the two I use together look amazing so I use them both every time. I’ll do a tad bit of mascara on my bottom lashes too, but definitely do not overdo it!

As a last finishing touch, I take a white cream eyeshadow and put it on the inside of my eyes and add a nude lip to balance it all out. And voila! You’re done!

Now that you have the perfect smokey eye, you obviously want it to stay in place throughout the night. This time last year, I finally decided to get contacts and since then, it’s been challenging to keep my eyes from drying out throughout the day. I’ve tried multiple contact brands and even switched to the one day wear contacts. But halfway through the day, my eyes are left feeling dried out. It’s super important for me to have a great product with me to keep my eyes happy through whatever it is I’m doing that day. That’s why I always add Clear Eyes® Pure Relief™ for Dry Eyes to my bag.

Clear Eyes® Pure Relief™ is designed for those who suffer from dry eyes.
