Wow. It’s finally the last day of 2015! The year has been quite the roller coaster with its highs and its lows. It was an interesting chapter of our life that unfortunately included many goodbyes. Since it’s the last day of the year, it’s time to do a recap of our 2015.
We kicked off the new year with our amaxzing friends in North Carolina and attended our first beer festival together a few weeks later. It really wasn’t a super eventful month.
We started off the month with a birthday celebration for our friend, Emilio. We love birthdays in our group. They’re always a chance to get everyone together and have a “wild” night.
I quit my job as a preschool teacher. It was a bittersweet goodbye. I miss my students and coworkers everyday but it’s been so nice to be able to focus on my marriage, my education, and this blog. It was a much needed change.
We also celebrated Zack’s 23rd birthday on the 28th and took a trip up to Maine to visit family for a few weeks. This was our first road trip together. 15 hours in the car together with an anxious German Shepard in the back wasn’t the most ideal, but the trip was as successful as it possibly could be.
We spent most of March in Maine and Vermont with family. The first two weeks of our trip were spent in Maine with Zack’s side of the family while the final week was spent in Vermont with mine. We celebrated Mitchell’s 20th birthday, went swing dancing wth friends, and spent some time relaxing. It was a much needed break from our everyday life.
In April we celebrated my 23rd birthday. Nothing big. Just a few friends, playing beer pong, eating food, and drinking in our garage. I really couldn’t have asked for a better birthday.
I also finally got the dental work done that I’ve been needing for years now. I couldn’t have been more excited to get the work done. I’m obsessed with my new teeth now.
At the end of the month, we had Zack and Kyle’s combined going away party. Zack was PCS’ing overseas and Kyle was leaving the police station on base and moving onto something new. It was an amazing night with just about every person we knew in North Carolina. We even had the party catered so that everyone could just mingle and have a good time without the added stress of having to cook food for everyone. It was perfect!
MAY + JUNE + JULY
May, June, and July were all relatively the same. At that point, we were just waiting to find out when we were officially PCS’ing so we lived every day like it was our last day in North Carolina with everyone.
In May I finally found my perfect school. I transferred to SNHU and have loved every minute of it.
We also watched the big fight at the start of the month, welcomed home a friend from his three month training in Texas, took a few day trips to New Bern and so much more. These months also consisted of many beach and pool days. We lived in our bathing suits this summer.
In early July, we got the dreaded news that Zack’s orders had been changed to ‘unaccompanied’. This was really hard on me. We had spent months trying to get me approved to go overseas with him only for his orders to be changed at the last minute. It was a rough rest of the month.
August was the most challenging month of the year for us. This is the month where we said goodbye to our first home in North Carolina along with all of our amazing friends that we had there. We packed up all of our belongings and made the trip to Maine. I had a couple weeks with Zack which I did my best to make the most of.
We were welcomed in Maine by our amazing family who put together a surprise belated wedding reception for us. We didn’t have a real wedding or celebration when we got married so it was so nice to have everyone there. We also traded in Zack’s truck for a vehicle that would be more snow friendly for me this winter.
Our final weekend together consisted of a lobster dinner with family and some bar hopping with friends. Anything to keep my mind off the fact that he was leaving. On the 26th, Zack was off to Japan to begin our year long separation. It was an emotional month to say the least.
September was my first month without Zack so I tried to keep myself as distracted as I could. I focused on school and my blog a lot. My baby sister, Alex also got me out of the house as much as she could. We went to her school’s homecoming football game and then the following night, she left me help her get ready for her junior year homecoming dance. It was really nice to have the time with her. I missed her so much when we lived in North Carolina.
In October, we celebrated two years of marriage. Unfortunately Zack couldn’t be here for it, but he was super sweet and made it up to me with a “happy anniversary” text right at midnight. He even let me do a little more shopping than I normally would do.
Alex and I went to the Fryeburg Fair with friends the first weekend in October. I’ve been dying to go to the fair. We used to go every single year when I grew up in Maine and I hadn’t been in about 3 years so it was at the top of my fall bucket list.
I also had the honor of photographing a friend’s wedding! It was so much fun to be behind the camera again and in a wedding setting. I loved every minute of it.
The following day, I took a day trip to Boston to see Chelsea and to get a new tattoo. I felt that this quote fit perfectly with our life right now. It says “nothing that’s worthwhile is ever easy”.
In November, we finally met Jenna and Hannah! We all went to Portland’s First Friday Art Walk together and had a blast. We all clicked instantly. A few weeks later, we all went to Boothbay together to see the Botanical Gardens Light Show which was absolutely amazing. It was a bit chilly out that night, but the gardens were gorgeous. It’s a must see.
Later that week, Alex and I celebrated Thanksgiving with Zack’s family. It was our biggest Thanksgiving celebration we’ve ever had.
This is also the month when we found out Zack’s leave got approved to come home for the holidays. I couldn’t have been more excited when he told me the news. I literally broke down in tears in the middle of a restaurant with his mom. I felt so relieved and so happy.
This month has been the best month of the year. It’s been full of so many amazing memories. We started off the month with a weekend visit from my friend Erika. She’s been wanting to visit for a while now so she came up from Vermont for a weekend to see us.
The following weekend, we did a family trip to New York City. It was our first trip together as a combined family and we had an amazing time together. And course the highlight of the trip was when my dad proposed to his girlfriend, Jenna. We couldn’t be more excited to be adding to our family in 2016!
A few days after we got back from New York, Zack finally came home for the holidays! This was the best Christmas present I could possibly ask for. That weekend, we traveled back to Boston to see the New England Patriots play. It was the perfect weekend getaway for us and Zack couldn’t have been more excited to see them play in person. While we were in the Boston area, we got together with my best friend, Chelsea for our first ever couples photoshoot. I’m so excited to print these off to have in our home.
Finally, we have Christmas. We are so fortunate to have been able to celebrate the holidays with everyone in our family. It was wonderful to be able to divide up our time between our two families without any issues. It was our first family Christmas where everyone was present and in one place. It couldn’t have been more perfect.
Of course I’m always fortunate for the amazing memories that we have throughout the year, but I couldn’t be more excited to say goodbye to 2015 and start on the next chapter.
