[ad] I'm a girl who loves a good manicure so I love to save time and money by doing my nails myself at home. Between constantly typing on my computer, cleaning the house, and chasing a toddler my nails really taking a beating. Because of this, my “manicures” tend to last me maybe 24 hours if I’m lucky. At that point, I was doing my nails on the daily and ain’t no mama got time for that! This week I'm sharing my love for @cndworld and my top tips for getting a flawless manicure from the comfort of your own home! #CNDVINYLUXatRA #sponsored •

8 Ways Military Families Can Keep Their Identities Safe

8 Ways Military Families Can Keep Their Identities Safe | Keating & Co.

As a military spouse, I know the importance of keeping my personal information safe.  Many believe that identity theft would never happen to them, but each year 15 million Americans have their identities stolen!  Military families are even more susceptible to identity theft due to frequent moves and being gone for long periods of time for trainings and deployments.  Identity theft can happen to anyone and can have many damaging, long-lasting effects.  It’s so important to take control and do everything you can to keep your financial and personal information safe.

Shred older documents and credit cards.

Just because you throw it in the trash, doesn’t mean your information can’t be accessed.  It’s important to shred any document that may contain personal information whether it’s your address, phone number, social security numbers, birthdates, etc.  Don’t just throw it away.  Shred it!

Keep an eye on your credit reports.

I use Credit Karma which is a free credit report service.  I think Zack uses Equifax.  I check my credit report once a month or once every couple months to make sure everything looks the way it should.  This allows you to catch any suspicious activity and take charge of it ASAP.  You are entitled to one free credit report each year so be sure to take advantage of it!

Protect your mobile device.

I love that I can access all my financial information from my iPhone.  It makes it so much more convenient when I have to pay a bill or check my bank account when I’m away from my computer.  The only problem with this is that it makes it very easy for hackers to get your information.  Make sure you’re downloading apps that are from reputable sources and don’t forget to read the fine print! It’s good to know what type of information the app may access on your mobile device.  I also create strong passwords for these apps and (whenever possible) I will use the fingerprint feature on my iPhone as the main way to log into these apps.  It’s a bit more added security so I know my information is safe.

Be careful of what you share.

Believe it or not, it really doesn’t take much for someone to steal your identity just based on the information you share online.  Some don’t even need your SSN to do it.  To be on the safe side, don’t share or post personal information online, such as your address, phone numbers, SSN, birth date, or birth place.

Create strong passwords and update them frequently.

I admit, I’m horrible at this.  I forget passwords easily so I try to make it easy on myself.  This is not a good idea.  Create strong passwords that include a mix of uppercase and lowercase letters, numbers, and even symbols, if possible.  Avoid using birth dates, pet’s names, your significant other’s name, etc.  Anything that could be easy to guess.  It’s a good idea to create different passwords for each account as well.  You wouldn’t want to make it easy for someone to access every account you have.  It’s also important to change your password a few times a year!

Keep personal and financial documents safe.

I keep all of our personal information as safe as possible.  Many people like to store their personal information on their computer, but this worries me.  If you’re going to do this then be sure to protect your computer by installing a firewall and downloading a good anti-virus software.  You should also make sure your wireless network is secure so that random strangers can’t access it.  I like to have hard copies of important information which I keep filed away in a safe place.  It’s also never a good idea to carry around your social security card.

Keep personal information as up to date as possible.

Be sure to update banks and creditors whenever there’s a change to your personal information.  This is especially good to do when you PCS.  Always keep them updated and notify them of changes ASAP.
