A Military Homecoming And A Weekend Getaway

A Military Homecoming And A Weekend Getaway | Why Hello Lovely

HE’S HOME!!! Can you feel my excitement right now? I couldn’t be happier to have my best friend home for the holidays. I’m so sorry that I’ve been completely MIA here this past week, but I legit dropped everything the moment he arrived. I tried to get everything done beforehand, but between my blog, and school, and miscellaneous errands I had to run, it just didn’t happen. So I apologize and I thank you all for your patience and understanding.

Zack officially arrived back in the states last Wednesday so I spent all day Tuesday getting everything ready for his arrival. I’m a huge procrastinator so my entire day was spent running errands that I should have done weeks ago. It was a long day, but on the bright side, everything got done! I even got a ton of cleaning done before I had to leave for the airport. I was rather impressed with myself.

His flight was an early one so I was up at around 2am and had to be in Boston (3 hour drive) by 5:40am to pick him up. I pretty much pulled an all nighter in order to do this. I was way too excited to sleep anyways. I picked up his mom and brother at around 3am, grabbed from coffee from Dunkin Donuts, and we were off to Boston!

It took everything I had to “contain” my excitement during the drive. I was way too excited to have him home and almost broke down in tears (happy ones of course) on multiple ocassions. I’m so thankful that Zack’s flight was as early in the day as it was. Navigating through Boston and Logan Internaional would have been a nightmare if I had been driving there in the middle of the day. If you’ve ever been to Boston then you know that driving there sucks.

When we arrived at the airport I was super disappointed to see that his flight was 30 minutes behind schedule. I had a whole hour to kill! So after finding his gate, we headed off to find the nearest Dunkin Donuts or Starbucks. A second latte was definitely needed at that point. We then sat down and anxiously awaited his flight. About 10 min after getting settled (at 5:40am), I got a text from Zack commenting on how cold it was in Boston. Confused, I texted back wondering how he knew how cold it was and how he was managing to text me from the plane. Well the boards were wrong and his plane had landed on time (thank God)! I immediately jumped up to go find him and within minutes I was finally back in his arms. 3 1/2 months apart so far and it was like he never even left.

On the drive back to Maine, we stopped at IHOP for breakfast. I’ve been craving IHOP for a few weeks now, but Zack loves IHOP so of course I had to wait for him to return. Zack’s cousin even met up with us as well. By the time we got back to the house, I had been up for about 24 hours and was completely exhausted. He played with our dog, Jack for a little bit before we finally passed out for a mid-day nap. When we woke up, we picked up my sister from school who was super thrilled to see him. Alex absolutely adores him so Zack skipped the gym to come with me to pick her up.

We then made a stop at his grandmother’s house before heading to his mom’s for dinner. Zack was still super tired when we arrived so he actually ended up taking another nap while we were visiting. We had plans with friends that night so he didn’t want to be too exhausted when they all arrived at the house.  We ended up going out for drinks and then brought everyone back to our friend, Tom’s house for a little get-together/party.  It was a super late night, but it was so nice to spend time with Zack and our friends.

Since our sleep schedule was so off, Tuesday-Thursday really feels like it was all one day at this point. It wasn’t until around dinnertime on Friday that I even realized it was Friday already! The first few days of Zack being home were spent bouncing back and forth between our family and friends. Thursday was pretty basic. We ran some errands, took yet another nap, and then had dinner at my dad’s house. Very relaxing and not very exciting.

Friday was also relatively relaxing. Again, we ran some errands and then had dinner with family that night. This time it was at his aunt’s house so we got to see his aunt, her boyfriend, his mom, brother, and grandmother. We also got to meet a couple of his aunt’s friends as well which was interesting to say the least.  This night was “early” to bed! Zack was asleep by 10:30 and I fell asleep around 11. A full, normal night’s sleep was just what we needed.

Saturday morning, I got up early to go see my step-sister’s ballet recital. Her dance class does the Nutcracker this time of year so I went with my dad and sisters as well as with her grandparents, aunt and uncle to see her perform. It was my first time meeting anyone on her side of the family (aside from my step-mother of course) so it was really nice to finally meet everyone and spend some time with them. They were all super sweet and I really look forward to seeing them again soon.

Unfortunately, Zack couldn’t join us. He took his brother, Mitchell out to help him with a little last minute Christmas shopping. Luckily he was able to meet up with us that night for dinner at my dad’s house. This was his first time meeting my new step-mother and step-sister and I must say, it went well! But then again, I really shouldn’t have been worried about it at all because a very good majority of people like Zack. Again, we went to bed relatively early because Sunday was a HUGE day!

For Christmas this year, all I wanted was to be able to celebrate Christmas with Zack and he wanted to go to a Patriots game while he was home (he’s kind of a superfan). So $2k later, all tickets were officially bought. We woke up Sunday morning at 4:30am and were on the road by 5:15. It was way too early for this girl, but Zack wanted to make sure we got parking and was hoping to beat some of the traffic (this actually ended up turning into an excellent idea). We dropped Jack off at his mom’s house for the weekend, picked up some coffee, and then we were off to Massachusetts!

You’d think I’d get super sick of road trips at this point. Just last weekend, I had driven to New York City and back for our family weekend getaway. Then on Wednesday I had driven to Boston to pick up Zack from the airport and now here we are driving back to Massachusetts just a few days later for the game. I’m pretty thrilled to not have any more road trips planned out for a few weeks.

We arrived at the stadium with a little over four hours to spare. We had a ton of time to kill, but I’m so glad we got there when we did. We hit little to no traffic and parking was a breeze! Neither one of us have ever been to Gillette Stadium before so this was a completely new experience for both of us. It was like its own little town. There were tons of restaurants, bars, and pubs along with NFL shops and even the typical stores you’d see in the mall. It was super cool to walk around and explore before the game. Zack even got to play a few games and won us Dunkin gift cards for his football throwing skills.

Zack couldn’t have been more excited once we were finally able to enter the field. He doesn’t show his excitement as openly as I do, but I could tell that there was nowhere else in the world that he’d rather be than at Gillette Stadium. He was completely decked out in his New England Patriots gear from head to toe (he even started out the day in his Patriots pj bottoms, but ended up being too warm and uncomfortable). He was all prepared for game day!

I’ll admit, we didn’t sit in our assigned seats. In fact, we never even saw them or went anywhere near them. We were seat hoppers. We were “those people”. But I actually didn’t mind at all. It was a bit on a chilly side (roughly 35 degrees and windy) so the walking around really helped us stay a bit warmer throughout the day. We first walked down to the front rows so that Zack could watch everyone practice before the game. It was pretty cool to be so close to the field and to the players. I got worried a few times that Zack may hop the railing. Luckily, he stayed put.

Once he was done admiring the field, we made our way up to the next level and grabbed some drinks. Rather than finding our assigned seats, we grabbed a couple empty seats as close to the balcony as we could get. We stayed there for the whole first quarter and probably could have stayed for the game, but at that point, we had to find a bathroom. I’m not sure why we didn’t go before sitting down, but that’s okay. It allowed us to stretch our legs and move onto another viewing space. We definitely spent about 90% of the game on our feet and surprisingly, my feet weren’t bothered at all by it.

I never watched football before marrying Zack and even on game day, I had a million questions for him so that I could do my best to follow along and feel more informed. But regardless of how little I knew about the sport, I had a blast! Sitting in the stadium, I could actually picture us living outside of Boston someday and being able to do this every time the Patriots have a home game. We’d pack up food and drinks and gather all of our friends to tailgate in the parking lot before the game. Our kids would be decked out in Patriots gear (of course) and we’d have season passes so that we could be at every single home game.

Recently, I’ve even been thinking about how awesome it would be to actually work for the NFL or for the New England Patriots. I’m majoring in communications and public relations (and will be starting a Masters in Business Administration (MBA) in the summer) which can lead to an amazing career if I’m with the right company. I even went as far as to look into careers with both companies to see what the pay is like and what types of requirements are needed for the positions I’m interested in. It would be a very challenging job to get, but Zack is incredibly supportive and insists I should at least try. I guess he’s right. The worst they can say is “no”. So who knows, maybe this will be our life in a few years.

If you live in New England and have never been to Gillette Stadium before, then I highly suggest you take the time and spend the money to go. It was so worth it! It was so much fun to be surrounded by so many people who love New England, Boston, and of course the Patriots. It was truly a unique experience and I know we’ll be back many more times.

How was your weekend? Are you a Patriots fan?
