Christmas Recap

Christmas Recap | Why Hello Lovely

Good afternoon and happy Monday everyone!  I hope you all had an amazing Christmas weekend with friends and family.  I am so thankful to have been able to celebrate the holidays with both sides of our family since they all live so close to one another.  We woke up bright and early and started out the morning at my dad’s house which worked out perfectly since he lives the closest to us.  There, we celebrated with my dad, my sisters, my step sister, and my dad’s fiancee, Jenna.  The only people we were missing from my side of the family were my grandparents, but they’ll be visiting from New York later this week.

Our family always does Christmas super early in the morning for some reason.  I think it’s because I have younger sisters and they get way too excited to sleep in on Christmas morning.  So we grabbed our coffee and egg nog and started on the presents within minutes of us arriving.  The girls did their “sister presents” the night before, but being me, I dropped the ball and forgot to bring them with me.  So we started off with my gifts to the girls and to our parents before moving onto all the other gifts and our stockings.

Out of everything I got from my side of the family, I really loved this ornament from my dad.  He actually gave this to us earlier in the week so that we could add them to our Christmas trees.  This will be our last Christmas just the four of us since he and Jenna will be getting married in the fall.  It’s bittersweet.  We’re so excited to be adding to the family and I couldn’t ask for a better stepmother or stepsister, but this is our core group.  The four of us have been through a lot the past couple years.  So it’s exciting to be going into a new chapter in our life.

I completely failed at sharing our Christmas card with you all this year, so I’m sorry!  We finally did our Christmas photos last Monday with my best friend Chelsea.  She was absolutely amazing and took time out of her morning to do our first couples photoshoot.  She even went home right after the shoot and began uploading them all for me because she knew I had to get my Christmas cards mailed ASAP.  I was able to look at them all and put together my Christmas card in the two hour drive home from Massachusetts which worked out perfectly for me.  She’s awesome and I couldn’t be more thankful for her.  You can check out her photography here.

I also couldn’t be more thankful for my friend, Kelly!  She finally launched her Etsy shop not too long ago and I couldn’t be more excited for her!  She was super awesome and custom made these New England Patriots Christmas cards for us.  You can check out her shop here.  These two girls made my belated Christmas cards possible this year!

Overall, our morning was perfect!  it was a great, relaxing start to our day.  I was a bit disappointed that Dunkin Donuts wasn’t open like it was on Thanksgiving, but surprisingly, I survived without coffee that morning.  By 11am, we all started getting ready to part ways.  Kendal was spending the afternoon with her boyfriend and his family while dad, Jenna, Hannah, and Alex went off to spend the afternoon with Jenna’s parents.  Our plans for the day really worked out great because since they were all going off to other places, Zack and I were able to go to his aunt’s house to spend the rest of the day with his family.

Our two Christmases were very different from one another.  Mine is very low key and consists of coffee and egg nog.  No one on my side of the family gets too crazy especially since Alex and Hannah are underage.  Then we get to Zack’s family Christmas where everyone is 21+ and we all love alcohol.  Let’s just say I had a few (too many?) of these champagne drinks that his aunt Melissa gave me.  I couldn’t even tell you what was in them besides champagne, but they were amazingly delicious.  She even put fresh raspberries in them  which made them look extra pretty.  I loved it.

For it being December in Maine, it was abnormally warm outside.  I’m definitely not complaining, but it’s a bit strange.  Typically we have lots of snow at this point and freezing temperatures, but it was in the 50’s on Christmas Day and we haven’t gotten snow at all yet.  The weather says we’re supposed to get some tomorrow, but they’re not making a big deal about it so chances are it’s not going to stick or snow enough for it to even matter.  Today is the coldest day we’ve had and it’s 27.  I’m not sure what’s going on, but I’m not complaining at all!  I’m loving the warm weather and not having to get bundled up before going outside.

Of course no family get together is complete without a million selfies with the selfie stick.  Mom and I both brought ours so while we waited for Zack’s cousin to arrive, we walked around the room taking a bunch of selfies with everyone.  I never thought I’d be the type to own a selfie stick, but they really come in handy.  In New York, it allowed me to take my own photos without having to hand off my iPhone to a random stranger on the street (I’m sorry, but I just don’t trust anyone) and for holidays, it allows us all to be in the photo rather than kicking someone out to take the photo.  It’s great!  If you don’t have one, you should get one.  You’re missing out.

I love my husband dearly, but I do very much wish he had kept his sweater on for our Christmas photo.  Either way, I still love it.  I put all three of our past Christmas photos next to each other for comparison and it’s so crazy to see how far we’ve come in such a short amount of time.  I feel like we’ve been married for forever now, yet I remember each of those Christmases like they were yesterday.  Our first photo was just two months after we had gotten married and just five months into our whole relationship.  Looking back on it, we were practically strangers in that photo.  Last year’s photo was our first Christmas in our own home, a year into married life.  Now this one, is two years in and so many things have changed.  I cannot wait to see where we are by Christmas 2016.

Once Zack’s cousin, Ryan arrived, we all settled into the living room to open our presents before dinner.  I never understood those families who all just open presents at the same time.  We like to take turns so that we can all see what everyone gets.  In my family, we do gifts from youngest to oldest so in Zack’s family, we do the opposite and open gifts from oldest to youngest.  We got so may great gifts from Zack’s family members.  My favorite gift of Zack’s was this custom sweatshirt that his mom got him with the Patriots/Superman logo on the front.  She even got his name put on the back of it.  I thought he had everything imaginable Patriots-wise, but this is a pretty cool sweatshirt.

After presents were done, we had a little bit of time to kill before dinner was ready so we moved outside to enjoy the weather a bit.  Zack and Mitchell played some basketball while I tried to take photos with them.  Neither one of them like photos.  This one took me a good 15 minutes to get him to agree to it.  Once we headed back inside, Mom and I filled up our drinks (of course) and decided to snap a few more pictures before dinner.  Zack wanted adult macaroni and cheese for Christmas dinner which is homemade macaroni and cheese with lobster meat and shrimp in it.  Sometimes we add scallops too.  It’s the absolute best macaroni and cheese ever.  I could eat it every night.  Ryan, on the other hand, wanted steak so we had both!

I’m so thankful that we were able to celebrate with every single family member on Christmas Day.  Not many couples are fortunate enough to be able to do that.  I couldn’t have asked of a better Christmas and I’m so glad Zack was able to come home to celebrate with us.

How was your Christmas?  Who did you celebrate with?  What did you get?

XOXO
