Exploring San Diego With Aveeno Suncare

We are officially in the in the last leg of our San Diego adventure. In just three short months, we’ll be packing up (yet again) and heading back to our home state of Maine. When we first moved here in 2016, I created a bucket list of everything I was hoping we could do while we were living on the west coast. Neither one of us had ever been out here before and to be honest, I’m not sure when the next time we’ll be out this way will be. So I made a list of everything we absolutely had to see and do.

Now that we only have a few short months left here, I’ve been looking back on our list and while we’ve overall done a pretty good job at crossing things off it, there’s still so much more I’m still wanting to do. And given that we have a toddler, they have to be family and toddler-friendly. So after asking around a bit, I came up with ten things we’re still wanting to do while we’re here in San Diego. But I’ll get to that list in a moment. First, I want to take a moment to remind you all how absolutely important it is to always pack sun protection this time of year!

Being that we live in San Diego where it’s sunny and warm all year-round, I never leave the house without sunscreen for both Allie and myself. Our favorites are the AVEENO® PROTECT + HYDRATE® Lotion Sunscreen with Broad Spectrum SPF 70 and the Aveeno® Baby Continuous Protection® Sensitive Skin Zinc Oxide Sunscreen SPF 50. We chose Aveeno because the brand is highly recommended by dermatologists and pediatricians as well as other parents I’ve talked to.

The Aveeno® Baby Continuous Protection® Sensitive Skin Zinc Oxide Sunscreen is non-irratating, hypoallergenic and water resistant for up to 80 minutes. It is also formulated with naturally sourced 100% Zinc Oxide and Active Naturals® Oat for superior UVA/UVB protection for babies with sensitive skin. To make it even better, it’s free of all parabens, phthalates, dyes, fragrances & chemical sunscreen ingredients! So this is an all-around excellent sunscreen option for little ones.

Another thing that I really love about it is that the formula is lightweight and doesn’t leave Allie’s skin feeling greasy and sticky like some sunscreens. And it’s also tear-free and clinically shown to be as gentle as water! If you’re a mama, you’ll understand and appreciate these added benefits.

For myself, I use the AVEENO® PROTECT + HYDRATE® Lotion Sunscreen. Similar to Allie’s sunscreen, it is formulated with with skin-soothing ACTIVE NATURALS® Colloidal Oatmeal which helps keep my skin soft and hydrated throughout the day. It provides 24-hour skin hydration against chlorine, salt water and sweat which is a big deal in the summer months when we’re coming in contact with all three of these on an almost weekly basis. Just like the Aveeno® Baby Continuous Protection® Sensitive Skin Zinc Oxide Sunscreen, this sunscreen is water and sweat resistant up to 80 minutes so be sure to reapply sunscreen on everyone in your family throughout the day if you’re out for an extended period of time.

So now that we’re all lathered up with our sunscreen, let’s get started on our top ten things we want to do this summer while we’re still here in San Diego!

Have A Beach Day

I know, I know. How basic, right?! Well as embarrassing as it is, we actually have never had a beach day here. Shocking, I know! How can we possibly live so close to the ocean and not have a single beach day? Well, we haven’t. And now we have a toddler who is actually terrified of the sand. BUT I’m determined to spend a day at the beach and get her used to the sand. So wish us luck here.

Hike to Potato Chip Rock

If you live in San Diego or have visited before, then you’ve probably heard of Potato Chip Rock. In short, it’s a rock that’s very flat and looks like a potato chip. Pretty straightforward. But it’s one of the most Instagrammable places in San Diego so I’d love to take a morning or afternoon to hike to it and get some great shots of the views.

Explore Seaport Village

I’ve been wanting to explore Seaport Village for a couple months now. I don’t know too much about it, but it sounds like it’s a super cute little village on the water in downtown San Diego. Full of restaurants and cute little shops that you can explore. AND they have a Ben & Jerry’s location there as well and being from New England, I absolutely cannot pass up some good ice cream. So the ice cream alone is a good enough reason to visit the village.

Go Whale Watching On The Bay

I want to go whale watching so bad!! I’m not sure what it is, but it seems to be a really popular activity here and the wildlife off the coast of California is so different compared to back home in Maine. We have whale watching back home but it’s definitely not as big as it is here. So I’d love to get out on the water and see some whales!

Birch Aquarium

Pretty simple. Zack and I love aquariums (Allie does as well on her good days haha) and we hear good things about Birch! So we hope to go sometime this summer.

Have Fun At Belmont Park

Belmont Park is an amusement park located right on the water in Mission Beach. We have something similar back home in Maine (in Old Orchard Beach), but Belmont Park seems to be a bit larger. There’s arcades, games, rides, food, entertainment. They have it all! There’s just something about an amusement park on the beach that just screams ‘fun’ to me. I’m not sure how much “fun” it will be with a toddler, but I’m determined to find out.

Tour the USS Midway

I’m not sure what it is, but I’ve always been a huge fan of learning about military history. My history class my sophomore year of high school was so fun to me because it covered all the World Wars as well as the Korean and Vietnam War. I loved that part of history. So being able to tour various ships is so fun to me. I don’t know anything about the USS Midway, but I’m excited to find out more on the tour.

Go To The Big Bay Boom On The 4th Of July

We weren’t able to do this last summer due to Allie only being a month old at the time. But with 4th of July right around the corner and Allie being a toddler now, I’d really love to have a later night out and enjoy some fireworks. And I hear awesome things about this fireworks show and apparently it’s the largest fireworks display on the west coast! So I very much want to go this year.

Explore Coronado

Since we obviously needed some awesome photos for this blog post, we decided to go ahead and cross this one off our summer bucket list this past weekend (we’re over-achievers over here)! I figured since yesterday was Father’s Day, we’d get out of the house and spend the day together as a family so this worked really well.

Before heading out on our day trip, we actually had to make a stop to pick up some more sunscreen (remember at the beginning of this post when I stressed how important sunscreen is?). Allie is outside on an almost daily basis these days so we go through sunscreen like nobody’s business. So since we needed more sunscreen, we skipped on over to our local CVS before heading out and picked up a new bottle of the Aveeno® Baby Continuous Protection® Sensitive Skin Zinc Oxide Sunscreen. CVS is having a buy one, get one 50% off on Aveeno Suncare deal which is valid from June 17th to June 30th, 2018! So if you’re in need of sunscreen for your next outing, be sure to stop in at your local CVS to take advantage of this offer!

Coronado is located just off the coast of San Diego and it’s super cute and fun to explore. There are lots of local shops and restaurants as well as the beach and the famous Hotel Del Coronado (as pictured in this post). It’s also home to the U.S. Navy as well. The whole island is super cute and is a must-see if you’re visiting San Diego. We spent the afternoon exploring the shops, checking out the Del (Hotel Del Coronado), and snacking on delicious treats. We would have taken a walk on the beach, but Allie isn’t a fan of sand so that wasn’t an option this trip!

If you need food options in Coronado, we highly recommend Costa Azul Coronado if you love Mexican food or the Village Pizzeria if you love a good pizza. Both have awesome food! And if you want a good milkshake or ice cream cone, then check out MooTime Creamery. We tried it yesterday and it was delicious!

Visit The ‘Greetings From San Diego’ Mural

Super simple, but I very much want a photo in front of this mural sometime before we leave San Diego. While we haven’t LOVED living here, this is where we became a family of three. It’s where we rebuilt our lives together after Zack returned home from a year overseas. It’s been a bumpy ride to get to where our little family is today so at some point this summer, I want a family photo here.

It’s bittersweet knowing that this is our last summer here in San Diego, but I’m determined to make it a really good one. And as long as we have our Aveeno® sunscreen on hand, our whole family will be well-protected as we head out on our summer adventures!
