Well we are FINALLY in our home as of Monday (thank God!). It was a long week in a cramped motel room. Two adults and one very large German Shepard in a single room that was smaller than our new master bedroom was completely miserable. Unfortunately, we did not get to move into the apartment over the weekend like planned. We found the place on Friday and for some reason Zack’s background check took forever. We figure it’s because of his job, but we don’t know. Luckily we got the phone call Monday morning that we were good to go so we immediately drove over to the leasing office to sign all the paperwork and get the keys.
Since we thought we would be moving in on Saturday, we had already called ahead to set up the electric and water and all that so it was all set by the time we arrived. We also scheduled our movers. Zack’s stuff from Okinawa arrived yesterday (Wednesday) and the rest of our belongings will be coming from storage on Friday. Cable is being hooked up today and then wifi was a whole other story.
If you follow me on Twitter then you’ve probably seen my rants about Time Warner Cable. I really hate to complain about other companies on social media. I really do. I think it’s a bit rude and not at all classy. But I’m now a hypocrite because we had an awful time with them this week. We called Monday to get it all sorted out. Since we were only doing wifi with them, they were fine with us picking up the modem and hooking it all up ourselves. We’re not idiots when it comes to technology. There’s not much we can’t figure out on our own and we’ve hooked up internet a million times before. This thing just wasn’t working for us.
That night, we called customer service to see if they could figure it out from their end and after an hour of frustration and multiple customer service reps, we gave up. It was going nowhere at that point. Every person we talked to insisted we didn’t have it plugged in correctly (it’s two cords. How hard could that possibly be?!). So we gave up for the night and used our mobile hot spot to watch Netflix on the MacBook. Tuesday was the same scenario. We spent the day out running errands and when we came back, it still wasn’t working. We called again and of course it got nowhere.
Wednesday was the last straw. We used an insane amount of data in order to get work done and keep ourselves entertained in our empty home and we were paying for internet that didn’t even work. It was beyond frustrating. We spent another two hours on the phone with them until FINALLY the internet started working out of nowhere. At this point, we had made 7 phone calls to customer service and talked to probably about 10 different people in order to get it resolved. And we still don’t know why it didn’t work. Super frustrating.
Anyways, now that that frustration is out, I can move on with the tour! I’ve had a lot of people ask for photos of the new place so this will be part 1 of the tour. Once we have the rest of or things from storage and get it all set up the way we want it then I’ll do a part 2 to show you all the finished product. But that one wont be for a few more weeks.
So we were very fortunate to get an apartment on the first floor. Like I had mentioned in our travel posts, Jack is not a people person right now. So it makes it much easier on us if he’s on the first floor. We even lucked out and have a small yard towards the back of our building where he can use the bathroom without seeing anyone which works out perfectly. Much less stressful for all of us when we have to take him outside.
We chose their most expensive 2 bedroom, 2 bath apartment so that we’d have as much space as possible. I also really wanted hardwood floors rather than carpet as well. I really had my heart set on a 3 bedroom though simply because we plan to start our family soon. I really wanted to already have that third bedroom ready and not have to compromise my office space. So it looks like we’ll end up having to move again next year, but we’ll see where we are by then. We’d still love to buy!
I never thought I’d be this in love with an apartment, but it’s pretty perfect if you ask me. The living room is super big and has a cute little patio off to the side. Jack loves going out there so sometimes we’ll just leave the door open for him so he can come in and our (don’t worry, it’s blocked off so he can’t get out!). There’s also a closet out there that holds our washer and dryer although we’re going to have to check with our leasing agent and see if we can put in our own. They give you a washer and dryer, but they’re super old and I’m just not a fan. Ours will be here with the rest of our stuff on Friday and I have no idea where they’re going to go right now. So we’ll have to check with them on all that and figure it out. I’d hate to sell them since we practically just bought them. We’ll see.
I also really love this kitchen as well. It’s in its own little space, but it’s still open enough where I can talk to Zack while cooking and still be a part of whatever is going on in the living room. It also comes with a microwave so like the washer and dryer, I have no idea where we’re putting our microwave. Is it normal to constantly buy and sell things when you move? I just feel like that’s such a waste of money. But this kitchen gets a ton of light and has hardwood floors just like the living room. It’s super cute.
Next we have my office space. I’m already thinking ahead to when all my office furniture gets here and how I want it all set up. It’s about time I get this blog back on track. No more excused. We’ve moved and we’re settling in so there should be zero distractions from here on out. I hope to be back in the office and working like normal sometime next week (after the house is put together…otherwise I’ll just sit in my office thinking about all the boxes that still need to be unpacked). I’ve been brainstorming a ton of awesome content for you all this past month and am working on a few collaborations so I’m very excited to move forward.
Next, we have a small bathroom off the hallway as well as a closet that would typically house a vacuum and other miscellaneous things, but w’re turning it into Zack’s gear closet instead. He had a huge closet under the stairs at out place in North Carolina and it really helped. All of his things were in one place so it was easy to find and wasn’t out in the open throughout the house. So this will be his gear closet and house all things related to the military and his job.
Lastly, we have our master bedroom which I am SO excited about. The master bedroom itself is pretty large and then we have a hallway that leads into the master bathroom. Both sides are mirrored closets so the left side is mine and the right side is Zack’s. Today I’m spending the day getting all of Zack’s clothes cleaned and his closet organized before he comes home from work (hence why this blog post is occurring so late in the day). I’m going to have to do a closet tour at some point once I have my closet all organized and looking nice. I’m very excited for my organizational plans for it so I’ll definitely be sharing it with you all.
Next we enter the bathroom area which is pretty big. We have the double sinks which is super exciting because we didn’t have that in our last home. Zack actually used the bathroom down the hall so we rarely shared the same bathroom. Of course it also has a toilet and a rather large shower with tons of space for all my shower products. I still have to get ALL of my products organized under the sink and in the cabinets and all that, but I think I’ll have to wait until the rest of our belongings get here from storage so I can see what storage containers I have. I’d hate to buy new bases and containers when I have a ton in storage. So for now the bathroom is a complete mess.
I do have my nail polish put away though! There’s a medicine cabinet on my side of the counter which perfectly houses all of my nail polish and my nail polish removers. It’s rather perfect. My nail polish is even put away by color at the moment although I may change it to brands instead. I’m not 100% sure yet. I’ll have to see how this works out for me first. But I’ll share how I’m organizing the bathroom too once we get it all set up and looking nice!
So there you have it. That’s part 1 of our home tour. We’re super excited to get the rest of our belongings tomorrow so we can get the house all set up. We currently just have the essentials and are sleeping on an air mattress. We’re also living off take out food since all our dishes and all that are in storage. So I’d love to have our stuff. Plus I haven’t seen it all for a year! Everything has literally been in boxes since before Zack left for Japan. So you can imagine how excited I am to FINALLY unpack. I’ll keep you all posted as we get settled into our home and stay tuned for part 2 of this house tour!
